Beginner's guide: win your first race
Nebula Rush is easy to start and rewards a little skill. Here is everything you need to go from the grid to the podium in your first few races.
The controls
Nebula Rush plays three ways. The big screen shows the race; you drive with whatever device you joined on.
| Action | Phone (tilt) | Keyboard | Gamepad |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steer | Tilt left / right | A / D or ← / → | Left stick |
| Accelerate | Hold the gas button | W or ↑ | Right trigger / A |
| Brake | Hold the brake button | S or ↓ | Left trigger / B |
| Drift | Drift button while turning | Shift | Right bumper |
| Fire item | Item button | Space | X |
On a phone, hold it sideways (landscape). Tilt steering feels best after a few seconds — small, smooth tilts beat big swings.
Yes, you have to brake
At top speed you cannot hold a tight corner flat out — the car washes wide. Lift off and tap the brake before the apex, then power out. Braking a little early is almost always faster than crashing the wall late.
Drift for free speed
Hold drift through a corner to slide, and a mini-turbo charges up. Release it as you exit for a burst of boost. Chain drifts through a sequence of corners and you will pull away from anyone who just steers.
Boost pads and tokens
Glowing pads and pickups on the track give you a boost — grab them on the racing line, especially onto a long straight. Boost also makes your ship feel its fastest, so time it where it counts.
Use items, and read the alerts
Pick up items from the item gates. Offensive ones (missiles, mines, EMP, shockwave) hit rivals; defensive ones (shield, repair, boost) help you. When something is coming for you, a HUD alert names it — and when you are hit, the screen tells you what hit you, so nothing feels random.
Pick a ship that suits you
Ships trade off top speed, acceleration and handling. If you are new, start with a balanced all-rounder. Love the straights? Take a high top-speed ship. Prefer the twisty tracks? A nimble, drift-friendly ship will reward you.
Ten quick tips
- Brake before the corner, accelerate through it.
- Take the inside line on tight corners, the wide line on fast sweeps.
- Drift every corner you can — the mini-turbo adds up over a lap.
- Save a boost for the longest straight.
- Hold a shield until you actually hear the threat alert.
- Drop mines right before a corner where rivals can't dodge.
- Don't fight the wall — a clean exit beats a fast, scrappy entry.
- Watch your ping badge: a rough race may be the connection, not you.
- On a phone, smaller tilts, held steady, steer straighter.
- Learn one track really well before you chase all eleven.
FAQ
Do I really need to brake?
Yes — at top speed the tightest corners cannot be held flat out. A quick lift or brake before the apex is faster than hitting the wall.
How do I drift?
Hold the drift button while turning to slide; a mini-turbo charges up and releases as a boost when you come out of the corner.
Which ship is best for beginners?
A balanced all-rounder. Once you know the tracks, switch to a top-speed or drift-focused ship to match your style.
