Drifting and boost: find free speed
The gap between a good lap and a great one is mostly free speed: drifting and well-timed boost. Here is how to get both.
How drifting works
Hold the drift button while turning and your ship slides through the corner. As you drift, a mini-turbo charges — hold it longer for a bigger tier. Release the drift as you exit and you fire the boost. The trick is to start the drift on the way into the corner and let it run all the way through.
Chaining drifts
On a sequence of corners, release one drift and immediately start the next. Each release adds a burst, so a well-drifted esses section puts real distance between you and anyone who just steers.
Boost pads and tokens
Glowing pads and pickups give you an instant boost. Grab them on the racing line, and aim to trigger a boost right onto a long straight where the extra top speed pays off most.
Timing it all
- Drift the corner before a straight so your mini-turbo fires onto it.
- Don't waste a pickup boost mid-corner — carry it to the next straight.
- Higher-speed ships pull away hardest while boosting; time it where they can stretch their legs.
- Boost makes you harder to steer — keep it for where the track is open.
FAQ
How do I get a mini-turbo?
Hold the drift button through a corner to charge it, then release the drift as you exit to fire the boost.
When should I use a boost pickup?
Save it for the longest straight you can reach, where the extra top speed gains the most time.
